Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has launched a controversial initiative that critics say could pave the way for him to stay in power indefinitely. By assembling a team of legal experts to draft a new constitution, Erdogan claims he is addressing the outdated nature of the current legal framework, which was crafted after the 1980 military coup. However, opposition leaders argue this is just a strategic move to extend his presidency beyond 2028.
Erdogan insists the existing constitution is no longer suitable for modern Turkey, saying it still carries the influence of its military origins. While the claim may sound legitimate on the surface, many believe the true goal is to eliminate the two-term limit and secure his place at the helm for years — if not decades — to come.
Erdogan has held power since 2003, first as Prime Minister for over a decade, and then as President since 2014. In 2017, he pushed through constitutional amendments that dramatically increased presidential powers. Now, the push for a new constitution is seen by many as a bid to reset term limits and remove legal barriers to permanent rule.
Turkey’s opposition parties are not buying Erdogan’s justification. They argue he has repeatedly used legal reforms to strengthen his grip on power, and the current initiative is no different. Some analysts warn that the country is veering toward a one-man rule, threatening its democratic foundations.
As Erdogan gears up for another constitutional overhaul, questions are rising about the future of democracy in Turkey. If successful, the new framework could turn Erdogan into a de facto lifetime president — a possibility that has sparked global concern.
