The conflict between Israel and Iran is quickly becoming a global emergency. What started out as a regional conflict is now threatening to spread to nearby countries. In a phone conversation with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed grave concern, describing the war as a direct threat to Turkey’s security.
President Erdogan highlighted three major risks the conflict poses—not just to Turkey, but to regional and global stability.
Israel’s precision missile strikes on Iran could easily spill into Turkish territory. Given Turkey’s geographic proximity to Iran, the threat is no longer hypothetical.
Turkey fears a surge of refugees fleeing Iran, which could worsen its already fragile economy and strain infrastructure. If the war deepens, Turkey could face an uncontrollable humanitarian emergency.
Erdogan’s gravest concern: potential use of nuclear weapons. If either Iran or Israel escalates to that level, the consequences would not remain confined to the Middle East—they would ripple into Europe and beyond.
Calling for immediate global action, Erdogan urged for diplomacy, not war. He insisted that the dispute over Iran’s nuclear program should be resolved through negotiation—not airstrikes.
“Turkey is working closely with the international community to restore peace and stability in the region,” said Erdogan.
Israel has recently conducted direct airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities and military bases, while Iran has retaliated with missile attacks on major Israeli cities including Tel Aviv. The conflict is no longer theoretical—it’s unfolding in real time.
Turkey shares a long border with Iran and is strategically positioned between Europe and the Middle East. Its geo-political position makes it both a potential target and a refuge for those fleeing conflict.
