As world leaders gathered in Canada’s snowy Rocky Mountains for the G7 summit, it was U.S. President Donald Trump who once again shifted the spotlight with a dramatic announcement. Even before the summit formally began, Trump declared he would be leaving Canada early to return to Washington.
The official reason? The “situation in the Middle East.” According to White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt, Trump’s early departure was meant to focus on “several pressing issues,” though insiders believe the Iran-Israel escalation was the real driver.
Fueling speculation, Trump took to social media just hours into the summit and warned residents of Tehran to evacuate the city immediately. He offered no explanation, but the post was seen as part of a psychological pressure campaign aimed at Iran amid growing regional tensions.
While European leaders — French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and Canadian host PM Mark Carney — worked to finalize a joint declaration on the Iran crisis, Trump refused to sign.
The draft statement aimed to:
A U.S. official defended Trump’s decision, stating he had already made his stance public and didn’t see the need to sign a joint communiqué. Still, European leaders hoped he could be persuaded.
In a press conference during the summit, Trump suggested that diplomatic talks with Iran were back on the table. “Iran wants to talk… something will happen soon,” he told reporters. However, he offered no concrete plan or timeline.
He also revealed he had issued a two-month ultimatum to Iran, which expired on Friday — the same day Israel launched its most aggressive strikes yet on Iranian nuclear sites and military targets.
Trump stirred fresh debate by repeating his belief that removing Russia from the G8 in 2014 was a mistake. “Had Russia still been in the group, maybe the Ukraine war wouldn’t have happened,” he said.
This drew a sharp rebuke from Macron, who countered that a nation violating the UN Charter has no credibility as a peace broker in the Middle East.
Though the G7 summit is designed as a platform for collaborative global leadership, Trump’s actions once again showcased his preference for unilateral decision-making over consensus building.
His early departure and refusal to endorse the joint statement marked a clear rift among the world’s top democratic powers — and highlighted the political tension overshadowing the summit.
