Trump Administration Offers $1,000 and Travel Aid for Voluntary Deportation

In a new policy move, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that undocumented immigrants who voluntarily return to their home countries will receive $1,000 and travel assistance under the Trump administration.

Self-Deportation Framed as the “Safest and Most Cost-Effective” Option

According to DHS, self-deportation remains the best alternative for those living illegally in the U.S. “If you are here illegally, self-deportation is the best, safest and most cost-effective way to leave the United States to avoid arrest,” said DHS Secretary Kristi Noem. The incentive is now available through the CBP Home App.

High Costs of Forced Deportations Drive Policy Shift

The Trump campaign’s aggressive immigration stance calls for large-scale deportations, but such efforts face hurdles due to high costs. DHS data shows that forcibly arresting, detaining, and deporting a single individual costs about $17,000, compared to significantly less for voluntary exits.

Early Success Reported Under New Policy

DHS noted that the first instance of financial travel aid has already been implemented. One migrant was provided airfare from Chicago to Honduras, and more tickets have reportedly been booked for the coming weeks.

Deportation Numbers Under Trump Lag Behind Biden-Era Figures

Despite the tough rhetoric, the Trump administration has deported approximately 152,000 individuals since January 20—fewer than the 195,000 deportations recorded over a similar timeframe under President Biden in 2024.
