The War Won’t Be in the Air — It’ll Be on the Runway. And We’re Losing.

The War Won’t Be in the Air — It’ll Be on the Runway. And We’re Losing.

In a daring and unprecedented military operation, Ukraine has delivered a massive blow to Russia’s strategic air power — and sent shockwaves through global defense circles. Launching long-range drone attacks on five Russian airbases, including those as far as 4,000 kilometers away in Siberia, Ukraine has proved that distance is no longer a defense.

According to Ukrainian sources, the attacks destroyed at least 41 nuclear-capable bombers — including the Tu-95 and Tu-22M3 — along with a critical A-50 AEWAC surveillance aircraft. Analysts now call this the largest direct assault ever on Russia’s nuclear air deterrent, targeting the very backbone of its long-range strike capabilities.

A Wake-Up Call for America

The implications go far beyond Russia. Tyler Rogoway, editor-in-chief of The War Zone and a well-known defense analyst, warned that this kind of strike should deeply concern the United States. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he wrote, “This isn’t just a Russian problem. This kind of attack could happen in the U.S. tomorrow.”

Rogoway criticized America’s lack of preparedness, noting that China has built 400 hardened aircraft shelters in recent years, while the U.S. has constructed only 22. He urged U.S. defense officials to stop ignoring these vulnerabilities, emphasizing that many of America’s most advanced aircraft are left exposed on the tarmac, waiting to be turned into easy targets.

The Next War Won’t Be Fought in the Skies — But on the Runways

The 2023 Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) wargame involving a simulated conflict between the U.S. and China over Taiwan also echoed Rogoway’s concerns. The results were chilling: most U.S. aircraft would be destroyed on the ground before even taking off — proving that runway dominance may decide the next war, not air superiority.

UFOs or Foreign Spy Drones?

Rogoway also revived a startling claim: many of the so-called UFOs spotted over U.S. military zones in recent years may actually be low-tech foreign surveillance drones rather than alien technology. He linked these sightings to a growing pattern of espionage-focused drone activity, which may be testing vulnerabilities in U.S. airspace.

Strategic Devastation in Russia

The Ukrainian drone strike wasn’t just about downing planes — it strategically crippled Russia’s nuclear-capable air fleet. The destruction of the Tu-95 and Tu-22M3 bombers, along with the A-50 airborne early warning aircraft, amounts to a direct hit on Russia’s nuclear deterrence and its ability to wage long-range warfare.
