In a development that has reignited global fears over nuclear proliferation, a confidential report from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has revealed that Iran now possesses enough enriched uranium to potentially build up to 10 nuclear weapons. This alarming disclosure has put fresh strain on stalled diplomatic talks between Tehran and Washington, raising urgent questions about the true nature of Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
Between February 2024 and April 2025, Iran increased its stockpile of 60% enriched uranium from 274.8 kilograms to a staggering 408.6 kilograms—marking a nearly 50% jump in just three months. According to the IAEA, this enrichment level is dangerously close to weapons-grade uranium, and could be escalated to 90% purity (suitable for nuclear arms) in less than two weeks if Iran decides to take that step.
Transparency in Question
Despite Iran’s repeated claims that its nuclear program is entirely peaceful and meant for civilian use, the IAEA has expressed deep concern over the lack of cooperation and transparency. The agency reports that Iran is refusing to provide critical information about its nuclear sites and has been evasive when questioned about old nuclear equipment.
Rising Tensions With the U.S.
Negotiations between Iran and the U.S. have seen five rounds so far, aimed at reviving or creating a new nuclear agreement. However, these efforts appear to be faltering. Iran recently dismissed a new proposal from Washington, calling it unserious. Tehran has even gone as far as warning that it may withdraw from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) if new sanctions are imposed.
Israel and U.S. Leadership Speak Out
The Israeli government has responded strongly to the IAEA’s findings. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called for immediate global action, warning that Iran is now closer than ever to acquiring nuclear weapons. He emphasized that mere statements will no longer suffice—real action is needed.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump’s team claims they had presented Iran with a “clear and fair” proposal, and that it’s in Iran’s best interest to reconsider. The timing of this report is particularly significant, as the IAEA Board is set to meet in June 2025, where a resolution against Iran could lead to renewed international sanctions.
