U.S. Vice President JD Vance has arrived in India for a four-day official visit, accompanied by his Indian-origin wife Usha Chilukuri Vance and their family. His aircraft landed at Delhi’s Palam Airport on Monday morning, where he was welcomed with military honors. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw received him at the airport.
Vance is the first U.S. Vice President to visit India in 12 years, marking a significant moment in diplomatic relations between the two countries.
The most significant event on the first day of the visit was a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Vice President Vance at the Prime Minister’s residence. The leaders discussed progress in the India-U.S. Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) and emphasized deepening partnerships in energy, defense, and technology.
Prime Minister Modi extended his best wishes to U.S. President Donald Trump and expressed anticipation for Trump’s proposed visit to India later this year.
Amid ongoing negotiations on the bilateral trade agreement, both nations are working to resolve issues related to tariffs, trade imbalances, and market access. Recently, Deputy U.S. Trade Representative Brendan Lynch visited India and held extensive talks with Indian officials on these topics.
Vice President Vance’s visit goes beyond diplomacy. He is scheduled to visit Jaipur and Agra with his family, underlining the cultural and personal connection he shares with India.
To honor the visiting delegation, Prime Minister Modi hosted a formal dinner for Vance, his wife, and other members of the U.S. team.
The United States is keen on expanding exports of oil, gas, and defense equipment to India as part of its effort to reduce the $45 billion trade deficit that currently favors India.
