Iran’s Collapse Could Set Pakistan on Fire—The Inside Story of Munir-Trump Meeting

Pakistan is one nation that is especially concerned about the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran, which is having an impact well beyond the Middle East. Pakistan’s military leadership is becoming more and more worried as tensions rise that a fallout from Iran’s regime could lead to a spike in separatist violence along the Pakistan-Iran border, especially in its unstable Balochistan province.

General Munir’s Unprecedented Meeting with Donald Trump

General Syed Asim Munir, Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, recently voiced these worries in a rare and historic meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington, according to a Reuters exclusive. There was no political change or military takeover in Pakistan, so this two-hour lunch meeting at the White House was the first time a U.S. president had met with a Pakistani military chief.

Following the encounter, Trump declared in public that he felt “honoured” to have met Munir. Later, the Pakistan Army confirmed that during their private discussion, the two leaders talked about cryptocurrency, trade, economic cooperation, and terrorism.

Iran Conflict Could Ignite Pakistan’s Separatist Problems

According to reports, General Munir expressed concern about the porous 900-kilometer border between Iran and Pakistan, stating that if Israeli military action weakens Iranian state structures even more, it may turn into a hotbed for separatist and jihadist insurgencies.

The fear is not unjustified. Separatist militants in Pakistan’s Balochistan region have increased their activity in recent weeks, reflecting the unrest that is developing on the other side of the border.

Jaish al-Adl Eyes the Chaos as an Opportunity

One of the key players exploiting the situation is Jaish al-Adl, a Baloch militant group that opposes Tehran and operates from Pakistani territory. On June 13, the group issued a bold statement declaring the Iran-Israel war as a “historic opportunity” for the Baloch resistance.

Jaish extended an open call to “all people, especially in Balochistan and the armed forces, to join the fight against the Iranian regime.” While the group presents itself as an Iranian opposition force, its cross-border presence in Pakistan makes it a double-edged sword for Islamabad.

Balochistan’s Own Separatists Could Be Emboldened

Pakistan’s internal security agencies fear that the ongoing geopolitical chaos could embolden local separatists, giving them new justification and external support to ramp up attacks on Pakistani security forces and infrastructure.

Balochistan has long been home to separatist insurgents demanding autonomy or independence. An unstable Iran next door could serve as both a safe haven and an ideological motivator for these groups.

The Terrorist Domino Effect

Former Pakistani ambassador to the U.S., Maleeha Lodhi, echoed these fears in a statement to Reuters, saying:

“The destabilization of Iran raises the specter of ungoverned spaces emerging—fertile ground for terrorist organizations.”

She pointed to historical patterns where power vacuums in conflict zones become magnets for extremists, warning that the Iranian border region could become the next major front in regional instability.

Strategic Calculations in Washington

Washington is also watching this development closely. While the U.S. remains focused on the Israel-Iran confrontation, it is aware that destabilization of Iran could have unintended ripple effects—from Afghanistan to the Arabian Peninsula and even Central Asia.
