Bangladesh is once again at the center of a growing political crisis, and signs of a potential coup are looming large. Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s sudden reappearance on the political scene has raised serious questions, while interim leader Muhammad Yunus, who has been running the country without a public mandate, is facing mounting pressure to step down. As the military, led by Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman, issues a sharp ultimatum, global powers like the United States and China are playing dangerous strategic games in the background.
The ‘Bloody Corridor’ Controversy
At the heart of the current crisis lies Yunus’s controversial proposal of the “Rakhine Corridor” — a strategic passage from Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar to Myanmar’s Rakhine state. While the US labels it a humanitarian route, Bangladesh’s military views it as a direct threat to national sovereignty. General Waker has strongly opposed the corridor, warning that it could drag the country into conflict with Myanmar’s military regime and regional insurgents.
Yunus: A Pawn of Superpowers?
Leaked reports suggest that Yunus is pursuing secretive geopolitical pacts with China, Pakistan, and the US — all without public or parliamentary approval. He is reportedly considering giving China access to a strategic airbase near India’s Siliguri Corridor, a sensitive area critical to India’s national security. His anti-India rhetoric, including calling Northeast India a “landlocked Chinese colony,” has only deepened mistrust.
Military Ultimatum: Elections or Exit
General Waker’s statement was clear: “We are not kings or police. We want to return to the barracks — but only after elections.” His firm stance indicates that the army won’t allow delays in restoring democratic governance. Yunus’s ally, Lt. Gen. Faizur Rahman, who is rumored to be pro-Pakistan, has been placed under surveillance by military intelligence.
International Legitimacy Slipping
Despite globe-trotting over the past year to court foreign support — including visits to the US, China, Vatican, Qatar, and Switzerland — Yunus has failed to gain genuine international legitimacy. Most recently, French President Emmanuel Macron refused to meet him, forcing Yunus to cancel his planned UN appearance.
Sheikh Hasina’s Comeback: A Warning Cry
In a fiery audio message, Hasina accused Yunus of selling the country out to extremists and foreign powers. She claimed he is planning to hand over Saint Martin’s Island and parts of the Bay of Bengal to foreign control — regions of critical national importance. She warned that the same forces that once assassinated her father are now manipulating Yunus.
India’s Growing Concern
India has voiced serious concern over Yunus’s policies, particularly as key trade and strategic partnerships — including textile and shipping deals — have been disrupted. India sees General Waker as a stabilizing force and is supporting the call for a return to democratic elections. New Delhi had earlier predicted that rising instability in Bangladesh would benefit rival powers — a warning that is now proving accurate.
