Explosive Deal: China’s Lethal Howitzer May Soon Be at India’s Eastern Doorstep
While India remains alert to tensions with Pakistan, a quieter — and potentially more strategic — military shift is unfolding in the East. Bangladesh is rapidly deepening its defense ties with China, raising fresh concerns in New Delhi.
Under the leadership of Mohammed Yunus, Bangladesh is reportedly planning to acquire self-propelled howitzer artillery (SH-15) from NORINCO, China’s state-owned weapons giant known for supplying the Chinese army.
A seven-member delegation from the Bangladesh Army, led by Major General Moazzem Hussain, is on a four-day official visit to China starting May 25. The delegation will attend a live demonstration of the SH-15 155mm self-propelled guns, and assess ammunition storage capabilities associated with the weapon system.
The SH-15 isn’t just another cannon. This mobile, truck-mounted howitzer can fire 4–6 rounds per minute, is equipped with an automated fire-control system, and can travel at speeds up to 90 km/h. Its 25-ton weight allows it to be easily airlifted via transport aircraft like the Ilyushin-78.
For self-defense, it can be armed with a 12.7mm heavy machine gun, and supports a crew of six. It’s designed for mobility, precision, and quick deployment — making it ideal for modern, flexible warfare.
This is the same artillery system that Pakistan procured from China in 2019 — a key detail that adds a sharper geopolitical edge to Bangladesh’s current military decisions.
This entire exercise is being coordinated under an invitation sent by NORINCO to the Bangladesh Army on May 15 — clearly signaling China’s strategic interest in equipping South Asian militaries aligned with its influence.
Bangladesh’s growing military cooperation with Beijing, especially in acquiring weaponry already in use by Pakistan, sends strong geopolitical signals that India cannot afford to ignore.
While these moves may be framed as routine defense transactions, the triangular military nexus forming between China, Pakistan, and Bangladesh has deeper implications for India’s national security and its long-term strategic calculus in the Indo-Pacific.
