China Just Unveiled Its Most Powerful Nuclear Missile—and the World Is Shocked
In a surprising move that has caught global observers off guard, China has for the first time revealed key details about one of its most powerful nuclear weapons—the DF-5 intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). Known for its tightly guarded nuclear program, Beijing’s rare disclosure came via state broadcaster CCTV, marking a shift in how China communicates its strategic military assets.
This unexpected announcement came just days after the 2025 Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, Asia’s largest defense and security forum. At the summit, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth directly warned China about its increasing military aggression, especially around Taiwan. Hegseth’s remarks, which mentioned China over 20 times, emphasized the U.S.’s commitment to countering Chinese influence in both the Indo-Pacific and Western Hemisphere.
Hegseth’s fiery rhetoric appeared to provoke Beijing. He warned that any attempt by China to seize Taiwan by force would have “catastrophic consequences.” He also highlighted China’s encroachments near the Panama Canal, asserting that the U.S. would not allow China to weaponize or control the strategic waterway. This strong message may have prompted China to unveil its missile capabilities as a show of strength and deterrence.
The DF-5, developed in the 1970s and officially deployed in 1981, is China’s first-generation strategic ICBM. The newly released specifications are striking: a two-stage missile capable of carrying a single nuclear warhead with an explosive yield of 3–4 megatons of TNT—about 200 times the power of the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Its range stretches to 12,000 kilometers (7,460 miles), making it capable of striking targets deep within the U.S. and Europe.
For the first time, China disclosed the missile’s dimensions: 32.6 meters in length, 3.35 meters in diameter, and a launch weight of 183 tons. According to a former instructor of the People’s Liberation Army, Song Zhongping, the DF-5 played a pivotal role in establishing China as a credible nuclear power. “Without the DF-5,” he said, “China would not be seen as a nation capable of reliable intercontinental strikes.”
An advanced variant, the DF-5B, includes MIRV (Multiple Independently Targetable Reentry Vehicle) technology, allowing it to carry several nuclear warheads. Each warhead can strike a different target, drastically increasing the missile’s destructive potential. Reports in 2017 also indicated that China tested a further upgrade, the DF-5C, which can reportedly carry up to 10 MIRVed warheads.
Analysts suggest this public revelation serves as a strategic message: China is not only modernizing its nuclear arsenal but is also prepared to defend its sovereignty in an increasingly hostile geopolitical environment. The DF-5 announcement, timed after stern U.S. warnings, underlines Beijing’s intent to assert itself as a dominant nuclear force on the world stage.
