While the world’s attention was once fixed on China’s treatment of Uyghur Muslims in Xinjiang, a quieter — but equally disturbing — campaign is unfolding in Tibet. This time, the targets are not activists or religious figures, but schoolchildren.
A new report has revealed that nearly one million Tibetan children have been separated from their families and placed in state-run colonial-style boarding schools. These institutions, tightly controlled by Chinese authorities, are accused of forcibly stripping Tibetan children of their language, religion, and cultural identity.
Originally exposed by Tibetan advocacy groups four years ago, the issue has gained renewed attention through a fresh investigation by the Tibet Action Institute (TAI). Their latest report, “When the Chinese Came for Our Children: China’s Colonial Boarding Schools and the Future of Tibet,” uncovers chilling new details about how the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is attempting to erase Tibetan heritage from the inside out — starting with the youngest generation.
Cultural Erasure in the Name of Education
The report accuses China of conducting a systematic cultural assimilation campaign, under the guise of education reform. Children — some as young as four years old — are being taken from rural families and enrolled in Chinese-language preschools and boarding institutions where Tibetan language and religious practices are banned. Even during school breaks, children are reportedly not allowed to return home freely or participate in traditional Tibetan ceremonies. The goal, as per TAI, is not merely education — it is indoctrination, designed to foster loyalty to the Communist Party and break generational ties to Tibetan identity.
Hard to Track, Harder to Stop
While the Chinese government has not released official figures, human rights organizations estimate that around one million Tibetan children are now in such institutions. The lack of transparency, media restrictions, and censorship makes independent verification extremely difficult. TAI, which was founded after the 2008 Tibetan uprising and Beijing Olympics crackdown, warns that Tibet is facing the loss of its future through a “slow, systematic cultural genocide.”
