Israel launched surprise airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear and military installations on the night of June 12–13, while most of the world was asleep. According to early U.S. statements, they had no prior knowledge and denied any involvement. Israel, however, soon disclosed that the Trump administration had been fully informed beforehand.
U.S. President Donald Trump responded bluntly, saying:
“Israel has attacked. We cannot allow Iran to develop nuclear weapons. We gave them 60 days to negotiate—they didn’t come.”
He praised Israel’s “excellent attack” but insisted that America did not wish to enter the war directly. Still, the situation was far from over.
Military analysts concluded that Israel was unable to destroy Iran’s deep underground nuclear sites as counterattacks intensified, particularly Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan, which are buried almost 90 feet underground. These call for GBU-57 bunker buster bombs, which are only available in the United States.
Facility | Depth Underground | Known Protection Level | Target Status |
---|---|---|---|
Fordow | ~90 feet | High (Bunker-grade) | Hit (Claimed) |
Natanz | ~80 feet | High | Hit (Claimed) |
Isfahan | ~75 feet | Moderate-High | Hit (Claimed) |
Trump had earlier hinted that a U.S. decision on military involvement would come in two weeks. But within days, American B-2 stealth bombers armed with GBU-57s took off, heading for the Gulf. Then came the bombshell tweet from Trump:
“Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan facilities have been completely destroyed.”
American warplanes launched coordinated airstrikes at 2:30 AM Iranian time. Trump claims that the mission was a total success, with warplanes entering and leaving Iranian airspace without being detected.
Israel verified that the attack was coordinated, which signalled a significant change in the course of the conflict.
Hours later, Trump announced he would address the U.S. public at 7:30 AM IST. His tweet included an unexpected shift in tone:
“NOW WE MOVE TOWARD PEACE.”
The all-caps message signaled an apparent endgame—but on the ground, the conflict was far from over.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei remained resolute:
“Palestine remains the core of our struggle. Its victory is inevitable.”
President Mahmoud Pezeshkian echoed the sentiment, vowing not to halt uranium enrichment:
“Our nuclear program will continue—for peaceful purposes.”
Within hours of the U.S. strike, Iran launched a counteroffensive on Israeli positions. Israel’s air defense systems were fully active, but the intensity of the attack signaled Iran’s refusal to back down.
A video of an Iranian F-14 fighter jet being destroyed on a Tehran airbase was tweeted by the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF). The video supports mounting evidence of Iran’s air defence systems’ inability to react, particularly the Russian-built S-300.
Both nations are running low on advanced weapons. The true extent of the damage to Iran’s nuclear sites will take time to assess. And whether Iran chooses to escalate or step back remains uncertain.
