Taipei: As military pressure from China continues to mount, Taiwan has begun a major overhaul of its defense strategy. With repeated military drills conducted by Beijing near the island, Taiwan is no longer just observing—it’s acting. Under the leadership of President Lai Ching-te and Defense Minister Wellington Koo, the country is now focusing on modernizing its military and preparing for any possible conflict.
Is War Coming? Taiwan Says: Be Prepared!
Defense Minister Koo emphasized that as an island nation, Taiwan must maintain a solid stockpile of military supplies to withstand repeated attacks. He highlighted the importance of long-term war readiness and strengthening the nation’s ability to resist aggression.
Military Reform in Full Swing
Taiwan has undertaken significant reforms in its defense forces in recent months. New technologies such as drones, mobile radar systems, and advanced air defense mechanisms have been introduced. Training programs for soldiers and senior officers have also been upgraded to ensure faster and more efficient response during emergencies.
Mandatory Military Service Extended
To boost manpower and military discipline, Taiwan extended its mandatory military service to one year starting January 2024. The move aims to build a more resilient and well-trained defense force among the youth.
Han Kuang Drills: Bigger and Bolder
This year’s annual Han Kuang military exercise is scheduled from July 9 to 18. Unlike last year, which was cut short due to a typhoon, this year’s exercise will be longer and more comprehensive. Its goal is to identify and fix any operational weaknesses in Taiwan’s defense setup.
China’s Military Moves Raise Eyebrows
The Chinese People’s Liberation Army has been conducting frequent drills around Taiwan, signaling an ongoing strategy to pressure the island. Beijing considers Taiwan part of its territory and has not ruled out the use of force to take control. Experts believe that these activities are an attempt to “normalize” military presence around Taiwan and wear down its resistance.
More Strategic Changes Coming Soon
A full review of troop numbers, deployment strategies, and military assets is expected later this year. Taiwan’s defense policy is evolving from a reactive approach to one that emphasizes anticipation and proactive preparedness.
