While India is still working to acquire its first fifth-generation fighter jet, the United States is preparing to take a massive leap forward with the introduction of its 6th-generation stealth fighter jet, the F-47, in the international defense market. Reports suggest that Japan may become its first customer, as discussions between US President Donald Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba point in that direction.
According to a Japanese media report (Asahi Shimbun), Donald Trump personally offered the F-47 during a phone conversation with Prime Minister Ishiba on May 23, initiated at Trump’s request. During the call, Trump discussed strengthening the US-Japan military alliance and specifically mentioned top-tier jets like the F-47, F-22 Raptor, and F-35.
Trump reportedly asked if Japan would be interested in acquiring America’s “best jets” and emphasized that the US was ready to bring only the most advanced platforms to its close allies.
Japan is currently part of the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP)—a joint 6th-gen fighter initiative with the UK and Italy. However, concerns are growing in Tokyo that the program may not meet its 2035 rollout target, forcing the Japanese defense ministry to look at interim solutions. These could include buying more F-35s or upgrading their existing fleet of F-15s.
According to insiders, Japan is actively reassessing its aerial defense gap and exploring faster alternatives to meet future combat challenges.
In March 2025, Trump awarded Boeing the contract to develop the F-47 6th-generation fighter jet, under the umbrella of America’s Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) program. Interestingly, Trump also hinted at exporting a limited version of the jet.
“We will sell a weaker version to select allies… maybe 10% less capable. You never know when they might stop being allies,” Trump reportedly said.
