350 Deaths a Week: Why COVID-19 Still Isn’t Over in America
Just when the world thought it had turned the corner on COVID-19, the virus is showing troubling signs of resurgence. Countries across the globe are witnessing a spike in infections once again. In the United States, the situation is turning deadly—with an average of 350 deaths every week, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Meanwhile, India has crossed 1,000 active cases, signaling a potential new wave.
The resurgence has been linked to new, highly infectious variants of the virus—most notably Omicron sub-variants JN.1, LF.7, and NB.1.8—which are spreading quickly and proving more aggressive than earlier strains. According to the CDC, the month of April 2025 alone saw: 406 deaths in the first week, 353 in the second, 368 in the third, and 306 in the fourth. This adds up to 1,433 deaths in just four weeks, despite major advances in treatment and vaccines.
One of the major reasons behind the rising death toll is low vaccination coverage. CDC data shows that between 2024 and 2025: only 23% of adults in the U.S. have taken the updated COVID-19 vaccine, and among children, the number is even lower—just 13%. This lack of immunity is making large segments of the population vulnerable once again.
India, too, is witnessing a slow but steady increase in infections. As of late May 2025, the country has reported over 1,000 active COVID-19 cases, with 753 new cases emerging just since May 19. States like Kerala, Maharashtra, Delhi, and Gujarat are showing the highest numbers.
Doctors and health authorities are urging people not to let their guard down. The following preventive measures are still crucial: avoid crowded areas whenever possible, self-isolate and get tested if symptoms appear, wear masks in public places, cover your mouth and nose while sneezing or coughing, wash hands frequently with soap and water, and maintain a healthy diet to boost immunity.
