A powerful natural disaster struck Punjab, unleashing devastating winds and heavy rain that left the region in shock and chaos. Without any conflict or attack, the violent storm claimed more than 20 lives and injured over 150 people, disrupting daily life and paralyzing transportation across the area.
Widespread Damage to Homes and Infrastructure
The storm hit hard on Saturday evening, ripping off rooftops, collapsing walls of older buildings, and uprooting billboards and solar panels. Many people were trapped under the debris, while others faced severe injuries. The worst-hit districts included Lahore, Jhelum, Sialkot, and Muzaffargarh, where the storm’s fury caused widespread destruction.
Vulnerabilities Exposed: Old Buildings and Falling Power Lines
Officials highlighted that fragile infrastructure, including dilapidated houses and unstable electric poles, contributed significantly to the disaster’s toll. Several children were among the victims, making the tragedy even more heartrending.
Chaos in the Skies: Flight Diverted Amid Storm
The storm’s impact wasn’t limited to the ground. A flight from Karachi to Lahore, FL-842, faced severe turbulence and had to return to Karachi due to the unsafe weather. Passengers were seen praying and in tears, fearing for their safety as the plane battled the fierce conditions.
Neighboring Regions Also Affected
Islamabad and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa experienced strong winds and hail, but no casualties have been reported so far. However, power outages and crop damage have affected many areas, and flooding has caused severe traffic jams on major roads.
Authorities Brace for More Bad Weather
The Meteorological Department has issued warnings about more rain and strong winds in the coming days, urging people to stay cautious. Punjab’s Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has ramped up relief efforts and continues to monitor the situation closely.
