AI is taking over online dating on bumble, happn, tinder, hinge. Is India swiping right?

Dating apps are increasingly integrating AI to enhance user experience by assisting in profile creation and initiating conversations. AI tools now help users select their most appealing photos and generate engaging conversation starters. These features aim to reduce dating fatigue and boost user engagement—particularly among Gen Z users. Many are turning to AI tools like ChatGPT to improve their dating profiles and communication. A recent survey revealed that around 20% of men aged 25 to 35 use AI to craft bios and messages, resulting in increased confidence and improved interaction quality.

AI for Safety and Authenticity

AI also plays a critical role in ensuring safety and authenticity on dating platforms. AI-driven systems like deception detectors are used to identify and remove fake profiles before they reach users. Hinge, for instance, has introduced a selfie verification feature requiring users to submit a video selfie to confirm their identity—an effective measure to reduce fake accounts.

India’s Unique Dating Landscape

In India, dating apps are adapting their approach to align with cultural nuances. Bumble, for example, empowers women to make the first move, staying true to its global mission. However, the Indian online dating scene faces a significant gender imbalance, with approximately 90% of active users being men. Additionally, users frequently report encountering fake profiles, especially on platforms like Tinder.

The Future of AI in Indian Online Dating

Despite these challenges, the role of AI in online dating is expected to grow. Apps are exploring advanced features such as AI-driven matchmaking, real-time conversation support, and enhanced safety protocols. AI is significantly shaping the future of online dating in India—offering innovative tools that elevate the user experience while also introducing new challenges to address.
