Vastu Shastra, the ancient Indian science of architecture and space planning, aims to harmonize human dwellings with the five elements of nature—earth, water, fire, air, and space. When these elements are imbalanced, it can lead to disturbances in health, relationships, and prosperity. Unfortunately, many people unknowingly make Vastu mistakes while building or designing their homes. The good news is, most of these errors are easily correctable.
Below, we cover some of the most common Vastu mistakes and practical tips to avoid or correct them.
Placing the main entrance in an inauspicious direction or near a bathroom or staircase.
The main door is considered the entry point for energy. An improperly placed door can block positive energy and welcome negativity.
Having the kitchen in the north-east corner or aligning the cooking stove in the wrong direction.
The northeast is a sacred zone and should ideally be left open for spiritual and mental clarity. Cooking here may cause health issues or financial instability.
Using northeast or southeast rooms as the master bedroom.
Building a toilet or bathroom in the northeast direction.
This area is spiritually significant and linked to mental clarity and well-being. A toilet here pollutes the energy of the entire house.
Cluttering or building heavy structures in the center of the home.
The Brahmasthan is the central energy point and must be open and free from weight or obstruction for smooth energy flow.
Placing mirrors opposite the main door or in bedrooms facing the bed.
Mirrors can reflect energy—wrong placement may bounce back positivity or disturb sleep.
Using dark shades like black, deep red, or grey throughout the home.
Dark colors can create a heavy or depressive atmosphere, blocking the natural energy flow.
Purchasing plots or apartments without checking direction, shape, or surrounding areas.
Irregular plot shapes or houses surrounded by negative spaces (like graveyards, dilapidated buildings) can bring long-term challenges.
