Common Vastu Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Vastu Shastra, the ancient Indian science of architecture and space planning, aims to harmonize human dwellings with the five elements of nature—earth, water, fire, air, and space. When these elements are imbalanced, it can lead to disturbances in health, relationships, and prosperity. Unfortunately, many people unknowingly make Vastu mistakes while building or designing their homes. The good news is, most of these errors are easily correctable.

Below, we cover some of the most common Vastu mistakes and practical tips to avoid or correct them.

1. Incorrect Placement of the Main Door

Mistake:

Placing the main entrance in an inauspicious direction or near a bathroom or staircase.

Why It’s a Problem:

The main door is considered the entry point for energy. An improperly placed door can block positive energy and welcome negativity.

How to Avoid It:

  • Ideally, place the main entrance in the north, northeast, or east direction.
  • Ensure it’s not directly in line with a toilet or staircase.
  • If relocating the door is not feasible, use Vastu remedies like placing a Vastu pyramid or a nameplate made of metal or wood.

2. Kitchen in the Wrong Direction

Mistake:

Having the kitchen in the north-east corner or aligning the cooking stove in the wrong direction.

Why It’s a Problem:

The northeast is a sacred zone and should ideally be left open for spiritual and mental clarity. Cooking here may cause health issues or financial instability.

How to Avoid It:

  • Construct the kitchen in the southeast (the fire element zone).
  • While cooking, face the east direction.
  • Avoid placing the stove and sink next to each other—they represent opposing elements (fire and water).

3. Bedrooms Facing the North-East or South-East

Mistake:

Using northeast or southeast rooms as the master bedroom.

Why It’s a Problem:

  • Northeast bedrooms can disrupt sleep and cause mental stress.
  • Southeast bedrooms may lead to aggression and conflicts.

How to Avoid It:

  • Place the master bedroom in the southwest corner of the house.
  • Reserve the northwest room for guests or grown-up children.
  • Use calming wall colors like beige, light pink, or earthy tones.

4. Toilets in the North-East Corner

Mistake:

Building a toilet or bathroom in the northeast direction.

Why It’s a Problem:

This area is spiritually significant and linked to mental clarity and well-being. A toilet here pollutes the energy of the entire house.

How to Avoid It:

  • Place toilets in the northwest or west direction.
  • If the northeast toilet already exists, place a Vastu salt bowl, aromatic diffusers, or use pyramids to neutralize the effects.

5. Ignoring the Center (Brahmasthan)

Mistake:

Cluttering or building heavy structures in the center of the home.

Why It’s a Problem:

The Brahmasthan is the central energy point and must be open and free from weight or obstruction for smooth energy flow.

How to Avoid It:

  • Keep the center of the house clean and clutter-free.
  • Avoid placing staircases, pillars, or heavy furniture here.
  • Decorate with a simple rangoli or a light fixture to energize the space.

6. Placing Mirrors in the Wrong Locations

Mistake:

Placing mirrors opposite the main door or in bedrooms facing the bed.

Why It’s a Problem:

Mirrors can reflect energy—wrong placement may bounce back positivity or disturb sleep.

How to Avoid It:

  • Never place a mirror directly opposite the entrance.
  • Avoid mirrors reflecting people while sleeping.
  • Place mirrors on the north or east walls.

7. Overuse of Dark Colors

Mistake:

Using dark shades like black, deep red, or grey throughout the home.

Why It’s a Problem:

Dark colors can create a heavy or depressive atmosphere, blocking the natural energy flow.

How to Avoid It:

  • Use light, earthy tones or pastel shades.
  • Reserve dark colors only for accent walls and balance them with ample lighting.

8. Ignoring Vastu While Buying Plots or Apartments

Mistake:

Purchasing plots or apartments without checking direction, shape, or surrounding areas.

Why It’s a Problem:

Irregular plot shapes or houses surrounded by negative spaces (like graveyards, dilapidated buildings) can bring long-term challenges.

How to Avoid It:

  • Prefer square or rectangular plots, facing north or east.
  • Avoid plots with cut corners or tapering shapes.
  • Use a Vastu compass or consult a Vastu expert before making real estate decisions.
