Aubrey Plaza, known for her sharp wit and compelling screen presence, made a poignant and graceful return to the spotlight on May 23 at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. The Parks and Recreation alum stepped back onto the red carpet for the premiere of Honey Don’t!, her first public appearance following the tragic death of her husband, filmmaker Jeff Baena.
Plaza, 40, arrived outside the iconic Palais des Festivals in a delicate sheer nude gown embellished with intricate beading. Underneath, a white strapless bodysuit lent a modern edge to the ensemble. Gold peep-toe heels, statement earrings, and loose brunette waves completed her elegant look—one that struck a balance between subdued and stunning. It was clear her presence was not just a professional duty, but a deeply personal act of resilience.
In one of the evening’s most moving moments, co-star Margaret Qualley was seen rushing to Plaza’s side, wrapping an arm around her in a gesture of compassion. Qualley, 30, turned heads in an off-the-shoulder cream gown featuring a dramatic black bow, but it was her emotional support for Plaza that stole the spotlight. Their embrace on the carpet became a symbol of quiet solidarity and sisterhood.
The Honey Don’t! premiere was also attended by fellow cast members Charlie Day, Talia Ryder, and Lera Abova, as well as director Ethan Coen and co-writer Tricia Cooke. Their united presence not only underscored their collective excitement for the project, but also reinforced the emotional backing for Plaza during her return to the public eye.
Honey Don’t! is a dark comedy that follows small-town private investigator Honey O’Donahue (played by Qualley) as she unravels a series of strange and violent deaths. Plaza plays a local police officer who becomes her unlikely ally. The film, due in theaters August 22, promises twisted humor, offbeat storytelling, and strong performances—particularly significant as it marks Plaza’s first major role since her personal loss.
Jeff Baena, 47, passed away in January 2025 from suicide, following a quiet separation from Plaza in September 2024. At the time of his death, Plaza had been living in New York. Reports confirmed that Baena had been undergoing therapy and that no substances were involved. Medical documents later revealed that Plaza had expressed concerns for his mental health in the months prior.
Though clearly emotional, Plaza’s return to Cannes was a moment of quiet courage. Her appearance on the carpet, flanked by peers and supported by her co-stars, felt less like a promotional event and more like a symbolic gesture of reentry—a way to step forward without forgetting what lies behind.
More than just a press event, Plaza’s evening at Cannes demonstrated the healing power of community, artistic expression, and professional purpose. As she embarks on her next chapter, both personally and professionally, Plaza’s journey is one of resilience in the face of loss—grief held gently in one hand, strength in the other.
