Comedian and actor Wanda Sykes was the star of the Critics Choice Association’s 2nd Annual Celebration of LGBTQ+ Cinema & Television. She attended the event in Los Angeles on June 6, 2025. Received Career Achievement Award. She also delivered a heartfelt speech.
Wanda Sykes: Please and Thank You
Sykes arrived from Europe, where she is touring her show Wanda Sykes: Please and Thank You. She flew in specifically to attend this special celebration. At the podium, she praised the LGBTQ+ community for its unity and love. She said, “I can’t think of a community that’s more loving than who we are.” She added, “Love is stronger than hate, We gotta be prouder, we gotta be louder”. She also spoke in support of transgender people. She urged Hollywood to stand up and protect them. She called them “our trans brothers and sisters” and said it was time to “protect” their rights.
Somebody Somewhere
The evening was full of joy and recognition. Other honorees included Bowen Yang, who received the Comedy Award. Bridget Everett and the cast of Somebody Somewhere received the Ensemble Award. Niecy Nash-Betts earned the Groundbreaker Award. Tramell Tillman won the Supporting Performance Award. Tim Bagley, her friend and co-star from Wanda Does It, presented her award. The two shared a warm moment on stage. It was a touching scene that showed the deep bond between them.
LGBTQ+ cinema
Sykes used her moment to speak up. She reminded the audience that the celebration is about more than awards. It is about community, acceptance, and visibility.
