In a major update in the legal case between actors Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, Lively has dropped two emotional distress claims. These claims said Baldoni caused her emotional harm on purpose or through carelessness.
According to The Guardian, the judge overseeing the case, U.S. District Judge Lewis J. Liman, officially dismissed those claims after Lively’s lawyers asked for them to be removed. The decision comes at a time when the case is drawing more public and media attention. Lively’s lawyers told Entertainment Weekly and People that they made this move to simplify the case, not because they were backing down. The emotional distress claims had become a hot topic, especially after Baldoni’s legal team requested access to Lively’s private therapy notes and medical records as part of the case.
Baldoni’s side saw it differently. A source from his legal team told People they believe Lively dropped the claims to avoid handing over sensitive personal information. “It looks like a strategy to protect details that could hurt her case,” the source said. Even though these two claims were dropped, the lawsuit is still very much ongoing. According to ABC News, Lively still plans to seek compensation for emotional distress, but through different legal claims—mainly related to alleged sexual harassment and retaliation.
The judge also denied Baldoni’s motion to compel Lively to turn over her medical records, calling the request moot since Lively was seeking to withdraw the claims that made those records relevant. (The Economics Times) Legal experts say this change could shape how the rest of the case plays out. With fewer distractions, Lively’s team may now focus more clearly on the core issues of the lawsuit, without getting bogged down in psychological evaluations or personal medical details.
According to Vulture, Judge Lewis J. Liman noted that the emotional distress claims could potentially be reinstated, but only if both parties agree to it—an outcome that currently appears unlikely. According to statements reported by Entertainment Weekly, Blake Lively’s legal team said the decision to drop the emotional distress claims was made to protect her privacy and streamline the case. They rejected suggestions that the withdrawal was out of fear or to avoid discovery demands.
The conflict between Lively and Baldoni began during the making of the movie It Ends With Us and is still unfolding in court. Both actors have said they are determined to defend their names. The entertainment world continues to follow the case closely as one of Hollywood’s most talked about legal disputes moves forward.
