Northern Waziristan in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province has turned into a battleground. A brutal attack by militants on Thursday claimed the lives of several Pakistani soldiers, exposing the deteriorating security situation in the region.
Terror Returns: Deadly Attack on Pakistani Army Post
At least seven soldiers were killed and over a dozen injured in a fierce attack on a military post in North Waziristan, a region already known as a hub of militant activity. According to local media, the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has claimed responsibility for the attack. The attack occurred at the Dari Nishtar checkpoint in Angoor Adda, where heavily armed militants launched a coordinated assault, catching security forces off-guard.
Military Confirms Deaths — But Downplays Numbers
While TTP claimed killing over a dozen soldiers, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media wing of the Pakistan Army, confirmed the deaths of only four personnel, including an officer. Among the deceased was Lieutenant Daniyal, who was reportedly beheaded by the attackers — a chilling detail that has sparked nationwide outrage. The names of the other fallen soldiers are:
- Ishfaq Butt
- Abdul Mannan
- Naib Subedar Kashif
- Sepoy Hameedullah
They were all stationed at the targeted checkpoint when the attack took place.
Injured Soldiers Airlifted as Hunt for Militants Begins
Following the attack, injured soldiers were airlifted by helicopter to a military hospital in Peshawar for treatment. The Pakistani military has since launched a search and sweep operation in the surrounding areas. However, difficult terrain and poor weather conditions are hampering the progress of the military response. Despite deploying reinforcements, tracking the militants in the mountainous border region remains a daunting task.
North Waziristan: A Longstanding Militant Stronghold
North Waziristan is widely regarded as one of Pakistan’s most volatile and dangerous regions. Located along the Afghan border, it has been a stronghold for anti-Pakistan militant groups for years. Repeated military operations have failed to fully secure the region, which remains largely outside the control of the central government. Militants continue to use the area for cross-border movement, training camps, and launching coordinated attacks on Pakistani forces. The district headquarters is in Miranshah, and the region spans over 4,700 square kilometers. Despite its strategic importance, stability in this area has proven elusive for Pakistani security forces.
