112 Drones in 3 Hours: Ukraine’s Record-Breaking Attack Freezes Moscow Flights
The Russia-Ukraine conflict continues to escalate, and instead of moving toward resolution, the war appears to be intensifying. In a dramatic development, Russian officials reported on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning that they had intercepted a massive wave of Ukrainian drone attacks — reportedly one of the largest to date. The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed that 112 Ukrainian drones were intercepted and destroyed across six different regions of the country.
Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin confirmed via Telegram that 12 drones were shot down while approaching the Russian capital. Due to the security threat, flights at Vnukovo and Zhukovsky airports in Moscow were suspended temporarily. The Federal Air Transport Agency announced emergency restrictions on air traffic in the capital.
According to the defense ministry, 59 drones were launched toward the Bryansk region, while others targeted Kursk, Belgorod, Tula, Oryol, and Kaluga. These attacks appeared to be a direct response to a major drone offensive previously launched by Russia into Ukrainian territory.
Although the Russian military frequently reports Ukrainian drone attacks, such a large-scale operation deep inside Russian territory — especially near Moscow — is rare. The latest strikes have forced Russian authorities to reroute air traffic and increase security in major urban centers.
Attempts at peace between Russia and Ukraine have largely failed. A ceasefire agreement was recently attempted but reportedly lasted only a few hours. Ukraine claims that Russia launched more than 900 drones in just three days, and the attacks have resulted in 13 civilian deaths, including three children, according to Ukrainian sources.
U.S. President Joe Biden has made multiple efforts to initiate peace talks, but those efforts appear to have made little impact on Russian President Vladimir Putin. Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump has issued a warning — calling for stronger sanctions on Russia and suggesting that Ukraine be given more freedom to strike back. So far, no concrete action has been taken, but if it happens, it could push the war into even more dangerous territory.
